Denmark Scales Up Its Climate Finance

image
10 December 2012

I strongly encourage other developed countries do the same - to take responsibility and make firm commitments here in Doha. At the same time, climate finance must be met by corresponding and transparent mitigation actions”, says the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building Martin Lidegaard.

Next step is to mobilize private finance, which will be a cornerstone in this endeavour”.

The climate fund

In 2012 Denmark created a climate fund to attract institutional investors. In 2012, 100 million DKK will be allocated to the fund, and another 125 million DKK is planned to be allocated early 2013.

The Danish climate finance in 2013 is focussed on climate activities – bilateral and multilateral – in the poorest and most vulnerable countries, and at the same time mitigation activities in some of the growth economies with rising emissions and large mitigation potentials.

Cost-effective opportunities

Denmark still stands ready to support the Green Climate Fund with 100 million DKK (13,5 million euro) when it becomes operational. The funding will also support reform of fossil fuel subsidies and enhanced efforts on energy efficiency in developing countries, two areas with very significant cost-effective opportunities to reduce emissions.

All of the Fast Start Finance contribution is grants and all money is allocated, programmed and approved. In 2012 Denmark has allocated 46 % to adaptation and 54 % to mitigation.
