The OECD has identified Copenhagen as a global leader when it comes to creating growth and jobs related to the green economy. The 34‐country organisation underlined the fact that companies in the Greater Copenhagen area saw their export of green services and products rise 55 per cent between 2004 and 2009 and that almost a third of cleantech business in the region saw exports rise between 2010 and 2011. Only four per cent experienced a fall.

Building on an ambitious policy

This success is the result of ambitious climate policy, an innovative approach to co‐operation between the public and private sectors, as well the creation of a regional cleantech cluster, according to the OECD.

“The OECD’s conclusions highlight Copenhagen’s ability to create green growth and jobs as part of our goal to make Copenhagen one of the world’s greenest cities. As mayor, it is my ambition to follow up the results by creating even more opportunities for growth in order to secure jobs and a high standard of living in the capital,” says Copenhagen Lord Mayor Frank Jensen.

Measuring Green Growth

The Greater Copenhagen region is the first area to be reviewed by the OECD, which – together with organisations such as Copenhagen Capacity – has developed methods for measuring green growth. Regions of Germany, the Benelux countries and Chile are next in line to have their green growth credentials reviewed.

“We are delighted that the OECD has identified Copenhagen Cleantech Cluster as having a significant role in the development of growth in Greater Copenhagen, despite only being in operation for three years. Most of the OECD’s recommendations align with our own plans over the coming years. Competition, especially in the cleantech field, will soon become so fierce that increasing our efforts and focus is vital if we hope to succeed and stay in front,” says Marianna Lubanski, head of the Copenhagen Cleantech Cluster.
