Responsible for moving over 80 percent of global trade and still heavily reliant on fossil fuels, the sector produces around three percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Reaching net zero by 2050 – the target set by the International Maritime Organization – will demand a fundamental transformation, including the large-scale deployment of clean fuels, coordinated international action, smarter regulation and continuous innovation across the value chain.

Offshore wind and shipping are closely intertwined. Specialised vessels and logistics are essential to deploying offshore wind at scale, while the green electricity it generates enables the production of sustainable fuels. Danish shipping companies have been key to building Europe’s offshore wind backbone and are now extending their expertise to new markets worldwide.
Clean fuels such as green methanol, ammonia and e-fuels are central to reaching net-zero shipping. Denmark is helping to move these fuels from pilots to full-scale production by combining policy support, cross-sector collaboration and investment. Through strong partnerships, the maritime sector is laying the groundwork for a global green fuel market.
Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) can reduce emissions from existing ships and serve as a feedstock for synthetic fuels. Denmark is a European frontrunner in CCUS with vast CO₂ storage potential in the North Sea and the maritime capabilities to transport captured carbon. The shipping sector is critical to connecting emitters with offshore storage sites.
Transforming the shipping sector will require new skills, strong partnerships and inclusive planning. Denmark is working to ensure that the transition is fair and future-proof – by investing in training, supporting developing countries, and helping maritime workers adapt to a low-emission economy.
