Denmark at the forefront of green shipping

Every fifth minute, a Danish-operated ship calls at a port somewhere in the world, contributing to connecting markets and keeping world trade flowing. With a strong shipping heritage, Denmark is among the biggest seafaring nations in the world. On top, Danish authorities and shipping companies are at the forefront of the green transition, pushing for climate action and ambitious global regulation towards net-zero shipping. With an ambitious call to accelerate the transition, Denmark aims for climate-neutral shipping by 2050 without the use of compensation.

A significant part of the Danish fleet plays a active role in making the green transition happen through its contribution to the development of new energy sources. This by being part of the building and servicing of offshore wind parks all over the world and by investing in solutions for carbon capture and storage (CCS), including the development of new green fuels.

Amongst Europe’s first movers on commercial-scale CO2 storage, the Danish CCS sector has the potential to be a huge climate mitigating factor. With a total subsoil storage potential of between 12 and 22 billion tons of CO2, the Danish part of the North Sea is a prime location for CO2 storage for industrial clusters across Europe.

In overcoming the major transportation challenge to proliferate CCS as a climate-mitigating technology, the Danish shipping industry can leverage its long history as a key partner in the development of a world-leading offshore wind industry.

Going forward, maritime transportation and services in all phases of the offshore wind farm life cycle, continue to be crucial in achieving current offshore wind targets and promoting the sector to new markets. Today, Danish offshore wind maritime competencies are heavily represented in the North European market – and have been leading for years. This has been the case for bottom-fixed offshore wind projects with immense potential for positive spill over in the upcoming development of floating offshore wind projects.

Today, Danish shipowners within the offshore wind sector are increasingly present on new-generation wind markets, such as Taiwan, the US, Japan, and South Korea.
