Creating the conditions for a green fuel market

Achieving climate-neutral shipping by 2050 requires a rapid scale-up of green fuel production, supported by major investment, international coordination and infrastructure across the value chain. If adopted, the upcoming IMO regulations could establish the framework for a global green fuels market, providing the regulatory signals and market mechanisms essential to make these fuels available and competitive.

Decarbonising global shipping is one of the defining challenges of the green transition.

Responsible for moving over 80 percent of global trade and still heavily reliant on fossil fuels, the sector produces around three percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Reaching net zero by 2050 – the target set by the International Maritime Organization – will demand a fundamental transformation, including the large-scale deployment of clean fuels, coordinated international action, smarter regulation and continuous innovation across the value chain.

En route to decarbonising global shipping

Despite its small size, Denmark is a global maritime hub. As home to leading shipping operators, offshore wind developers, technology providers and a strong regulatory framework, Denmark is uniquely positioned to drive progress in sustainable shipping – both at home and internationally.

This transformation will rely on several interconnected building blocks. Each one represents a major opportunity for collaboration, innovation and investment. The following four focus areas highlight how Danish know-how and partnerships are already accelerating the shift towards a net-zero maritime sector:
