Air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year. WHO data shows that 9 out of 10 people breathe air that exceeds WHO guideline limits containing high levels of pollutants, with low- and middle-income countries suffering from the highest exposures.
NOx gases, together with moisture and other substances, can form particles that can penetrate the lungs and make them more vulnerable to illness. Some of the long-term effects can be heart and lung diseases, and the short-term effects are primarily seen on people who already have e.g. asthma. They may experience that the symptoms get worse or that they get sick more often.
Reducing the NOx concentration in the air gives many remarkable health benefits, and it does not have any side effects.
Photocat develops innovative and smart solutions for environmental improvement using NOxOFF technology. From the laboratories, the most recent one is air-purifying asphalt. When embedded into the hot, freshly laid black mass, these concrete granules wonders help keep the surrounding air cleaner – a simple and straightforward solution.
We are proud of announcing that we just delivered this solution for another road in Denmark, namely Vestre Strandvej, in Skagen. The 7300m2 is part of charming Skagen Harbor, owned by Frederikshavn Municipality. Which reducing 146 kg. NOx every year for the next many years. Our Photocatalytic asphalt contains titan dioxide (TiO2), which is a sustainable way of decreasing the concentration of poisonous NOx in the air through a photocatalytic process.
“More municipalities in Denmark are aiming at actively choosing NOx reducing coatings for their paving. The great intentions and ambitions behind UN’s Sustainable Development goals are beginning to gain momentum among decision-makers in the municipalities. With NOxOFF, we have one of the future’s solutions and the tools to support and help achieve the UN’s world goals, "says Henrik Sarfelt, Photocat. He continues, “The municipalities want to be a part of the green agenda by – among other activities – implement solutions which improve urban air quality. Therefore, Photocat’s air-cleaning asphalt solution is easy, and the financial incentive is clear because the burden for the municipality can be up to DKK 600 per kg derived NOx”.
Photocat collaborates with the leading providers of asphalt roads in Denmark. We are proud to announce that the air-cleaning asphalt application – also in Skagen - has gone well. We are ready to welcome an extended pipeline of municipalities and private individuals for upcoming environmental tasks.
