Old houses often use extreme amounts of energy. The renovated house in Hjørring is a great example as to how well old residential buildings can become highly energy efficient.
After renovating the home to Passive House standards the house only consumes app. 134 EUR per year for heating. This is a remarkable difference compared to the 2819 EUR annual energy bill before the renovation.
Building year: 1960's, the renovation was completed in 2009.
Size: 96 m2
Energy consumption and savings
The renovated low-energy house only uses 12-13 kWh/m2 per year for heating, compared to 102 kWh/m2 per year before being renovated to Passive House standard. This energy saving is below the Passive House standard of 15 kWh/m2 per year. In comparison, a standard renovated house consumes 53.4 kWh/m2 per year presuming replacement of all heating installations for modern standards like hot water tanks, etc. - a cost saved if the house is built in Passive House standard
Insulation
The house already had 150 mm roof insulation which was supplemented with additional 350 mm ROCKWOOL insulation. The facades are insulated with 350 mm ROCKWOOL insulation on the external walls.
