Green initiative to ensure heating in Skagen

New heat pumps

Skagen District Heating Station (Skagen Varmeværk) has invested in three large electric heat pumps to ensure low heating prices and spare the environment for large amounts of carbon dioxide. In May 2020, a new facility of 750 square meters will be ready to produce electricity from the three electric heat pumps with a capacity of 4 MW each. Over the last 12 years, Skagen District Heating Station has implemented a number of green initiatives, and one of these initiatives is the utilisation of waste heat from FF Skagen’s production of fishmeal and fish oil. In addition, the heating station exploits additional electricity from windmills and waste heat from their motors.

Reduced emissions

By next year, all these initiatives will have been implemented. Overall, they will have reduced the heating station’s use of natural gas from 10 million cubic metres to just 2 million cubic metres, and the emission of carbon dioxide will proportionally decrease. Skagen District Heating Station has received a basic financial support from the Danish Government which combined with their responsibly economic approach to their business has ensured that the heating station is in a strong position to further invest in new facilities.
