The World’s Largest Biogas Facility is Being Built in a Gravel Pit in Denmark

At the start of the project it was expected to be the largest in Denmark, but as it turns out that might have been an understatement.

Energy Business Review (EBR) recently announced that the facility will be one of the world’s largest biogas facilities when it comes to treatment capacity and production. In their evaluation, EBR particularly emphasises the facility's treatment capacity of 1,050,000 tonnes of biomass and the effect of 45.4 MW/year, equivalent to the annual heat consumption of 26,000 households.

Among other things, EBR compares it to a biogas facility in Colorado that can treat up to 750,000 tonnes of biomass and has an effect of 33.1 MW/year. The facility is able to deliver heat to 19,000 households.

At Nature Energy they knew that the facility was large, but not to that extent.

-We are proud to be building the biogas facility in Korskro, but we had no idea that it was so big before we read the article, says Rasmus Winther from Nature Energy.

Problems with water
The facility, which may or may not be the world’s biggest, is slowly taking shape. The first tank has just been finalised, but the process has not been entirely problem-free.

-There has been a lot of water on the construction site, which has brought about some challenges for our work. This is due to the fact that the construction site was previously a gravel pit. However, we have been able to catch up on the delays that this has caused. The construction work is now progressing according to the plan and we expect the facility to begin operating in mid-2018, Rasmus Winther continues.
