2022 has in many ways been a year in the name of energy – both in positive and challenging terms. With surging prices and the continuing energy crisis, readers have been drawn to insights on how Denmark and Danish businesses seek to help close the gap and provide sustainable energy solutions supporting the wider green transition. Attention was also drawn to energy efficiency and water management with the International Energy Agency’s Annual Global Conference in Sønderborg and the International Water Association’s World Water Congress & Exhibition in Copenhagen as two major events taking place in Denmark this year.

In an effort to reduce its dependence on Russian gas, the Danish government presented plans to boost solar and onshore wind. The proposal also includes initatives to phase-out of natural gas, increase renewable gas and build out the district heating grid and harvest the full potential of the North Sea.

More than 20 ministers and representatives from nearly 70 countries joined the world’s most important conference on energy efficiency on 7-9 June in Denmark. In driving urgently needed improvements in energy efficiency, the IEA’s 7th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency concluded with the Sønderborg Action Plan.

Denmark’s energy island in the North Sea is one step closer to realisation following a new political agreement formed by the Danish Parliament. As a bedrock in Denmark’s Climate Act, the 10 GW North Sea energy island hub seeks to supply green electricity to millions of homes.

On 30 August, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen hosted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and government heads from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland for a high-level summit to strengthen EU’s independence from Russian gas, improve energy security and harness the Baltic Sea’s untapped offshore energy potential.

Denmark and Germany agreed to complete the planned Bornholm Energy Island, after Minister Habeck and Jørgensen gave the go-ahead to connect it to their respective countries. When established in 2030, the Energy Island will be the first of its kind and can supply 3.3 – 4.5 million Danish and German households with green electricity.

Denmark, Flanders and Belgium have concluded a specific arrangement, which makes it possible to transport CO2 between the two countries with the purpose of permanent geological storage. They are the first countries in the world to enter into such a bilateral arrangement.

With the biggest Danish COP business delegation in history, Denmark made an extraordinarily strong appearance at this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference #COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh. The Danish delegation in Egypt consisted of representatives from more than 30 energy leaders, green investors, business associations, solutions providers, engineers, NGOs and labour organisations.
