Challenge

Askøgade is, together with the courtyard of the future, part of a larger climate change adaptation project, which cease to experiment and try out different methods in relation to climate change. These experiments will secure us for the changing climate, with heavier and more frequent rain events and prepare the urban landscape for these changes. In this case innovative methods have been taken in use and the face of the street has been transformed completely.

Solution

The Stockholm’s method

In Askøgade there is introduced the so-called “Stockholm’s method”, where rainwater is collected from the surface into a membrane underlying the central part of the road. Here the water is stored and cleansed with a mixture of macadam, compost and active coal. The water is thereafter used to water the trees and various vegetation on the street. Underneath the parking, the pavement is permeable, which results in a faster infiltration and transportation to the rainwater membrane.

Result

From grey to green
Askøgade, which beforehand was a worn-down and grey parking lot, now appears as an open, green square, with space for cars, bikes and access to seating. This case visualizes how to create a balanced combination of innovative storage, infiltration and filtration methods and an overall increase in vegetation and functionality.

Renewed value
In connection to the courtyard of the future, the entire area creates great aesthetic and functional value for the residents and passing byers of the neighborhood and stands as a prime example of the future image of the city.
