200 New Hydrogen Buses to Denmark

In 2020, 200 new hydrogen buses will be driving around in Denmark. The European Union has provided funding of EUR 40 million for the production of 600 buses hydrogen, of which one-third will come to Denmark establishing a foundation for future sustainable transportation.

With more than EUR 13 million for hydrogen buses, Denmark receives a notable contribution to its green transition of the transportation sector. With the buses comes hydrogen filling stations, which a large-scale production plant for hydrogen refuelling stations in Herning, Denmark will be delivering. The factory will not only deliver filling stations in Denmark but for all 600 buses spread across Great Britain, Latvia and Denmark.

According to the Minister of Energy, Utilities and Climate, Lars Chr. Lilleholt, the funding for 200 hydrogen buses in Denmark is a result of the country's effort within climate as well as the location of the hydrogen filling stations.

"It is very positive that the EU has chosen to provide financial support for the implementation of hydrogen buses.  Additionally, it is a recognition that it is a Danish factory that is to provide the hydrogen refuelling stations for the buses. This combines the green transition and the Danish job market at the same time. We are receiving full value for the support we have given over the years to the research and development of hydrogen through the EUDP-programme", says Danish Minister of Energy, Utilities and Climate.

With the contribution from the EU, Denmark will be able to advance more rapidly in regard to hydrogen technology and allow it to become more competitive with traditional fossil fuel technologies increasing the development within sustainable transportation.

Did you know that...

  • With 200 hydrogen buses, Denmark will be able to reduce CO2 emissions by 14,000 tonnes
  • The new buses do not emit CO2 or particles, they only emit water
  • According to the plan, the first hydrogen buses will be running by 2020
  • Charging the buses for ten minutes allows them to drive for an entire day
  • The buses are driven by a fuel cell that uses hydrogen and oxygen from the air to produce electricity, cleaning the air from harmful particles at the same time
