Challenge

Bergen faces increasing traffic congestion and environmental concerns. The need for sustainable urban mobility solutions is critical to reduce CO₂ emissions and improve air quality.

Solution

The Phase 5 extension of the Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen) aims to connect the city center to Åsane over a 12.7 km route with 14 new stations. The project includes a 13 km bicycle path and a 3 km extension of the Fløyfjell Tunnel, enhancing multimodal transport options.

Result

Upon completion, the extension is expected to serve approximately 60,000 passengers daily by 2040, significantly reducing car usage and contributing to lower CO₂ emissions. The integration of cycling infrastructure and improved public transport will promote sustainable urban development.
