Energy efficiency in buildings

MEMBER OF THE U.S. GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL

One of the leaders in sustainability certification is the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). USGBC comprises thousands of organizations, chapters, students, and community volunteers that are transforming the building landscape in a number of ways. The shared vision is a sustainably built environment.

In 2000, the USGBC initiated the LEED certification program. LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) has since become one of the world’s most applied certification systems for sustainable design. It can be used to classify new buildings, renovation projects and master plans, as well as the firms behind the projects.

Several employees at Henning Larsen Architects have achieved LEED titles, enabling them to facilitate sustainable buildings and projects that can subsequently be LEED. Jody Lee Potvin-Jones is a LEED Accredited Professional with Building Design and Construction speciality. Nina La Cour Sell is a LEED Accredited Professional. Jake Spruit and Martha Lewis have achieved the title of LEED Green Associates.

LEED is based on a holistic approach to sustainability, and the certification addresses all factors in the building process. A system of allocated points certifies or pre-certifies projects as Silver, Gold or Platinum.

Henning Larsen Architects’ master plan for the King Abdullah Financial District as a whole has been pre-certified LEED, as have been a number of individual buildings within the scheme. This far-reaching certification will make the master plan the largest green urban development in the world as well as the first urban district to be LEED-certified.

Henning Larsen Architects has been a member of USGBC since 2014, but is experienced with other international certification schemes such as BREEAM, Cradle to Cradle, DGNB, and a number of national schemes, i.e. Australia’s GreenStar and Norway’s TEK10. In-house LEED and DGNB consultants and auditors contribute to our projects from the early design stages, and are responsible for guiding the process in accordance with the certification schemes.
