Diplomatic, charismatic, and always composed. A thought leader and a true connoisseur of life. Few have contributed more to advancing Denmark’s green business sector over the past two decades than Finn Mortensen.

Now, the man who has led Denmark’s public-private marketing consortium for the green transition for almost two decades celebrates a milestone birthday, marking a career that has taken him across industries and continents.

A career defined by business and a global perspective

Born in Herning, Finn Mortensen graduated in 1983 with a Master’s degree in business languages (English and French) from Aarhus School of Business. After a few years as a teacher at Viborg Business School and Assistant Manager at Andelsbanken (now Nordea), he took on a role in 1985 as a political and economic specialist at the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen. For the next decade, he kept American diplomats informed about Danish business and politics. It was during this time that he also developed a passion for American wine – an interest he continues to indulge to this day.

In 1995, Finn transitioned into journalism, leveraging his expertise in business and finance. He worked as a business journalist at Erhvervsbladet, before becoming a financial writer and news editor at Dagbladet Børsen. In 2002, he joined Berlingske, where he served as Business Editor until 2008.

From Climate Consortium to State of Green

In 2008, Finn was appointed the first director of the Climate Consortium, a public-private initiative established to highlight Denmark’s green expertise and technologies in the lead-up to the UN Climate Summit, COP15, in Copenhagen. Since COP15 in 2009, he has been responsible for Danish private sector participation in no fewer than 14 annual climate summits. Throughout these events, he has played multiple roles – from moderator and event organiser to even serving coffee – at numerous networking sessions, side events, and meetings at the Danish Pavilion, organised by State of Green. These events have often hosted key decision-makers, prime ministers, and world leaders.

In 2011, the Climate Consortium transitioned into State of Green, and the momentum has only grown since. In 2013, Finn Mortensen, alongside key partners, inaugurated House of Green—a sustainability showroom located in the House of Industries in the heart of Copenhagen. His Majesty King Frederik X, who has been a patron of State of Green since 2008, attended the opening, and has since visited on numerous occasions.

For years, Finn and his colleagues have welcomed a wide range of visitors at House of Green, from royalty and heads of state to business delegations, journalists, and students from around the world—introducing them to Denmark’s green transition. Each year, nearly 200 delegations from over 50 countries visit Denmark through State of Green.

On behalf of the entire consortium—its employees, board, and partners—we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Finn Mortensen on his birthday!
