Estimation of the extent of damages caused by climate change and its consequences for the building sector and adaptation needs for the building stock in Germany
The Federal government of Germany represented by the BBSR needs to know the financial impact of climate damages and needs to prioritize possible investments in resilience measures to inform future regulations and policy measures. Many industry stakeholders request this information to inform their strategies, like the insurance industry.
In collaboration with our partners INFRAS AG (economic assessments) , The University of Wuppertal (climate disaster assessment) and geomer GmbH (GIS modeling), GBE is currently working on an assessment of climate damages to the German building stock. The project consists of an inception phase with extensive methodology appraisal and testing in conjunction with a consulting panel of experts. After this phase, analyses of the climate impacts will be carried out with the aim to identify typologies of vulnerability. In a further step, adaptation measures will be appraised and proposed in alignment with positive synergies with climate mitigation measures.
