Discover green hydrogen and e-fuels

Green hydrogen and e-fuels play a vital role in advancing the green transition. Produced through electrolysis using renewable electricity, both are critical components in decarbonising industries and transportation globally.

With the official opening of the world’s largest commercial e-methanol plant in Kassø, Southern Denmark, the country has become the first in the world where Maersk’s methanol-powered container ships can refuel with green methanol.

Developed by European Energy and Japanese trading house Mitsui, the facility will produce up to 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually using biogenic CO₂ from biogas and waste incineration combined with renewable electricity. The green fuel will primarily be supplied to A.P. Moller – Maersk, one of the global frontrunners in green shipping.

“When you look at the production from Kasso, it is, of course, just a literal drop in the ocean, so we need to scale up and we need to bring costs down,” Emil Vikjar-Andresen, EVP and Head of Power-to-X at European Energy.

The milestone marks a significant step in decarbonising international maritime transport and showcases Denmark’s emerging role as a hub for Power-to-X technologies.

Fueling the green maritime transition

Maersk, which launched the world’s first methanol-enabled container vessel Laura Maersk in 2023, has committed to transition large parts of its fleet to green fuels. The company currently operates 13 dual-fuel ships and has 13 more on order. The off-take agreement with European Energy secures one of the first stable, commercial sources of green methanol for the shipping giant.

The production at Kassø could supply several of Maersk’s vessels annually. According to estimates, Laura Maersk alone consumes about 3,600 tonnes of methanol per year. With global regulation on maritime emissions tightening, green fuels like e-methanol are seen as key to achieving net-zero targets in shipping.

Beyond maritime use, the e-methanol from the facility will also be used in industrial processes. Danish companies such as LEGO and Novo Nordisk are among the first movers integrating green methanol into their production lines, while excess heat from the plant will help supply district heating to more than 3,000 local households.
