The European Commission has just allocated a three-digit million euro amount to projects developing infrastructure for the electrification and decarbonisation of waterborne, road, and air transport along the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).

Among the recipients is Port of Aalborg, which has been awarded a EUR 1.35 million – equivalent to more than 10 million Danish kroner – grant from the European Union (EU) for a project to establish hybrid shore power.

The project aims to develop publicly accessible, scalable, and mobile onshore power supply (OPS) solutions capable of providing electricity to maritime vessels and the port’s own machinery and equipment. Power will be supplied either directly from the power grid via a new switching station or through battery-powered mobile OPS units.

“A new hybrid shore power solution will allow us to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions from both vessels and port operations, while strengthening our position as a multimodal hub in the Baltic Sea region and along the Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor,” says Jesper Raakjær, Professor and Group Chief Visionary Officer at Port of Aalborg.

From electrification to competitiveness

The project contributes to the overall goal of electrifying the port of Aalborg and supports both the port’s green ambitions and its future business potential.

The upcoming shore power project will support Port of Aalborg’s adaptation to the new AFIR regulation on shore power, which must be implemented by 2030, while also contributing to the EU’s broader objectives for greener maritime transport solutions.
