World Hydrogen Week 2024

On 30 September to 4 October, Denmark will open its gates to hydrogen experts from across the world as World Hydrogen Week comes to town.

Together with World Hydrogen Leaders, Danish Industry, and Green Power Denmark, State of Green will serve as host partner for the World Hydrogen Week at Bella Center in Copenhagen.

Discover the event

Green hydrogen and e-fuels are key drivers in the green transition, produced via electrolysis powered by renewable energy. These technologies are essential to decarbonising industries and transportation worldwide.

Denmark, through strong collaboration and partnerships across sectors and borders, is committed to leading the way and realising the full potential of green hydrogen.

Explore Denmark’s legacy, ambitions, and future goals in green hydrogen below.

Green hydrogen is key towards reaching 100% renewable electricity

Denmark has a long-standing tradition of proactive energy policy, first sparked by the oil crisis in 1973. Over the years, a focus on energy efficiency, system integration, and renewable energy has brought Denmark closer to a fossil-free energy system, with a target of achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2027. The next phase involves decarbonising heating, transport, and industry through direct and indirect electrification, leveraging Denmark’s growing renewable energy capacity. By 2030, Denmark aims to produce more renewable energy than its electricity consumption requires.

Hydrogen plays a key role in this transition, offering significant potential to reduce CO₂ emissions in sectors that are challenging to electrify while supporting system integration, sector coupling, and the expansion of renewable energy. Denmark has set an ambitious goal to develop 4-6 GW of green hydrogen by 2030 and completed its first hydrogen tenders in 2023.

Denmark aims to reach 100 pct. renewable electricity in 2027 with green hydrogen playing a key role.

Building on a strong wind legacy

Denmark was the first country to install a commercial offshore wind farm more than 30 years ago and has been a first mover in the wind industry for decades.

Positioned between the North and Baltic Seas, Denmark is uniquely situated to harness abundant offshore wind resources, offering low electricity costs and the potential to become Europe’s green powerhouse. This provides a strong foundation for scaling up green hydrogen and e-fuel production, supporting a sustainable, net-zero energy system.

Denmark is already demonstrating how offshore wind can power renewable hydrogen production through projects across the country. Further advancements in green fuel technologies are key to reducing costs and scaling these initiatives. As a nation known for energy innovation, Denmark has a long history of turning pilot projects into commercial successes. This expertise will be crucial as green hydrogen and its derivatives become integral to future energy systems.
