Large-scale hydrogen project in Fredericia just launched
The first phase will have a capacity of 20 MW, which will supply approximately eight tonnes of hydrogen per day. The plant is expected to be completed by mid-2022.
“We must have a goal that is always a little further away than we know how to achieve, because only on those terms do we push ourselves“, said Dan Jørgensen (S), Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities.
The purpose of HySynergy is to reduce the climate footprint of the existing refinery in Fredericia, and simultaneously supply competitive green hydrogen for use in heavy transportation.
"We must have a goal that is always a little further away than we know how to achieve, because only on those terms do we push ourselves. And amongst other things, this is what has led to the decisions that have made it possible to support a project like this and other good projects. And if we do that, we will also develop the new technology that other countries, which may not have the resources, the know-how and the same entrepreneurial types as you, will also need", said Dan Jørgensen.
With both production and storage capacity, HySynergy will demonstrate the versatility of hydrogen and its ability to balance the energy system in the event of fluctuations in renewable energy production. The planned 20 MW is projected to be expanded to 300 MW in 2025 and 1 GW in the longer term.
“Something that seemed utopian just 3-4 years ago is now being expressed, not just on the desktop, but also in the real world. It is fantastic that the Danish business community is helping to set ambitions and direction for the green fuels of the future", said Martin Dam Wied, managing director at Dansk Energi.
Furthermore, the plant will facilitate the storage of green hydrogen. Fully expanded, HySynergy will make a significant contribution to the green transition and Denmark's overall CO2-reduction target of 70% by 2030.
"It is a big step for hydrogen production and for PtX in Denmark. It is not only the first sod for this 20 MW plant, but the first sod for large-scale Power-to-X in Denmark. This indicates that the sector is on the right track. Something that seemed utopian just 3-4 years ago is now being expressed, not just on the desktop, but also in the real world. It is fantastic that the Danish business community is helping to set ambitions and direction for the green fuels of the future", said Martin Dam Wied, managing director at Dansk Energi.
The first phase of the project has received a grant of DKK 48 million from the Danish Energy Agency and has a total budget of more than DKK 150 million.
