Power outages caused by Russian attacks on energy infrastructure have left many Ukrainians without reliable electricity. These outages strain Ukraine’s power grid considerably, particularly in the evenings when families prepare dinner and electricity demand peaks. Significant shortages in the energy supply can lead to prolonged power outages, which are especially critical during cold winter months.
To address these challenges, a new app, developed through a Danish-Ukrainian collaboration, is helping citizens reduce the duration and impact of power outages. ‘The Ukrenergo app’ provides a practical solution to an urgent problem, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in difficult times.
Reducing strain on the energy system
The new app lets users track planned power outages, receive real-time updates, and take proactive steps to conserve electricity. By reducing pressure on the grid, it helps shorten the duration of blackouts.
“Russia continues its severe attacks and constant attempts to destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, repeatedly leaving citizens without power. We need to support the energy supply wherever we can – and one of our new tools is an energy app developed by Ukrainian and Danish authorities. It allows citizens to conserve energy when there is a shortage and thereby helps reduce the duration of power outages.”
Lars Aagaard, Denmark’s Minister for Climate, Energy, and Utilities
Ukraine-Denmark energy cooperation
The app combines Denmark’s expertise in smart energy systems with Ukraine’s local knowledge. It reflects the two nations’ commitment to finding practical solutions during difficult times.
“The app is a good example of a concrete tool delivered directly to Ukrainian citizens through Denmark’s energy cooperation with Ukraine. It draws on Danish experiences in energy efficiency and balancing the energy system and can help reduce electricity consumption in Ukraine during periods of heightened pressure on the power grid. Ukrainians face a tough winter, and hopefully, the app can help make it just a little less difficult.”
Kristoffer Böttzauw, Director at The Danish Energy Agency
Encouraging cooperation and leveraging technological advancements aligns with European ambitions for energy independence and security. Moreover, the app could inspire similar solutions in other regions experiencing energy challenges, showing the potential of smart energy management.
