Green competitiveness high on the agenda for Denmark’s upcomming EU Presidency

Denmark has just released its priorities for the upcoming EU Presidency. With green competitiveness and energy security at the core of its agenda, the priorities places a strong focus on accelerating the green transition, decarbonising industry and strengthening Europe’s strategic resilience.

On 1 July, Denmark will assume the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union. In preparation, the Danish government has published its official programme for the upcoming six-month term. The priorities reflect a strong emphasis on European competitiveness, energy security, and climate leadership, at a time when the EU is navigating geopolitical uncertainty and the continued push for a green transition.

Green transition and competitiveness go hand in hand

Under the headline “A strong Europe in a changing world”, Denmark’s EU Presidency will work to strengthen the Union’s ability to act decisively in response to strategic challenges. The programme highlights a dual focus: enhancing Europe’s security while advancing the green transition in a way that supports economic resilience and industrial growth.

Green energy and climate ambitions play a central role. The Danish Presidency will support efforts to deliver on the EU’s target of climate neutrality by 2050, including securing agreement on the 2040 climate target. A continued expansion of clean, affordable energy production is essential – both to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and to support the decarbonisation of European industry and transport.

Energy infrastructure, regulatory simplification and access to green financing are all high on the agenda, with particular attention given to faster permitting and mobilising private investment in renewables and clean technologies. The Presidency also places focus on strengthening European energy supply chains and improving energy system integration across borders.

New technologies, including biotechnology and bio-based solutions, are highlighted as contributors to both the green transition and Europe’s long-term competitiveness. In parallel, the Council will advance negotiations on climate-related initiatives such as the Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act and new regulations to reduce emissions from transport and shipping.

While climate and energy dominate large parts of the programme, the Danish Presidency also prioritises European security and defence, as well as building resilience to crises. Efforts to strengthen infrastructure protection, strategic supply chains and economic security are presented alongside the EU’s continued support for Ukraine.

Green Together Experience: Explore Denmark's green footprint across Europe and beyond

In relation to the Danish EU Presidency, State of Green and The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs have launched a new EU map on Green Together Experience – a digital platform showcasing how Danish companies and partnerships contribute to green progress across Europe and globally. The map highlights projects within energy, water, climate adaptation, and circular economy, offering insights into practical solutions and cross-border collaboration.

Security of supply and green value chains

To support dialogue around the Presidency, State of Green promotes two key narratives that align with the programme’s themes. These narratives guide all of State of Green’s activities throughout 2025. We will continuously publish communication materials and organise events and activities that help support the messages and move the agenda forward.

Green transition as a catalyst to improve the security of supply
This theme highlights how accelerating the green transition can strengthen Europe’s independence from fossil fuel imports, mitigate supply chain risks, and enhance resilience in key sectors. From renewable energy integration to smart energy infrastructure, the EU Presidency presents an opportunity to align energy security with long-term climate goals.
