Green transition and competitiveness go hand in hand
Under the headline “A strong Europe in a changing world”, Denmark’s EU Presidency will work to strengthen the Union’s ability to act decisively in response to strategic challenges. The programme highlights a dual focus: enhancing Europe’s security while advancing the green transition in a way that supports economic resilience and industrial growth.
Green energy and climate ambitions play a central role. The Danish Presidency will support efforts to deliver on the EU’s target of climate neutrality by 2050, including securing agreement on the 2040 climate target. A continued expansion of clean, affordable energy production is essential – both to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and to support the decarbonisation of European industry and transport.
Energy infrastructure, regulatory simplification and access to green financing are all high on the agenda, with particular attention given to faster permitting and mobilising private investment in renewables and clean technologies. The Presidency also places focus on strengthening European energy supply chains and improving energy system integration across borders.
New technologies, including biotechnology and bio-based solutions, are highlighted as contributors to both the green transition and Europe’s long-term competitiveness. In parallel, the Council will advance negotiations on climate-related initiatives such as the Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act and new regulations to reduce emissions from transport and shipping.
While climate and energy dominate large parts of the programme, the Danish Presidency also prioritises European security and defence, as well as building resilience to crises. Efforts to strengthen infrastructure protection, strategic supply chains and economic security are presented alongside the EU’s continued support for Ukraine.
