On 28 October 2024, European Energy inaugurates its first green hydrogen facility in Måde, near Esbjerg. The new plant represents European Energy’s initial venture into large-scale hydrogen production using renewable energy sources. Completed in June 2024, the facility has successfully undergone commissioning and is now fully operational with its first electrolyser, provided by the Danish technology firm Stiesdal.

A step towards decarbonising industrial energy

The facility, positioned strategically near Esbjerg’s industrial hub, is designed to meet both local and global demand for sustainable energy solutions.

“By initiating operations in Måde, we can supply green hydrogen to the market. This step shows that the transformation of our energy systems is not a distant goal—it is happening right now. European Energy is proud to be among the leaders in this global field.” Knud Erik Andersen, CEO of European Energy

Plans are already in place to expand the facility’s capacity by adding two additional electrolysers, with the next installation anticipated in 2025. Upon full completion, the plant will have a capacity of 12 MW, with an estimated annual production of 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen.

Serving local needs and export markets

The green hydrogen produced at the Måde plant will be supplied to Port of Esbjerg and an international leader in industrial gases, supporting both regional and global energy needs. Beyond hydrogen, European Energy is committed to efficient energy use; excess heat from the production process will be repurposed by DIN Forsyning, Esbjerg’s local utility company, further enhancing the facility’s environmental impact.

“This facility is only the beginning. The experience we gain here in designing, building, and commissioning will allow us to streamline future projects, lowering costs and reducing timelines. These efficiencies are critical in decarbonising industries that cannot be directly electrified.” Emil Vikjær-Andresen, EVP and Head of Power-to-X at European Energy

Towards 100% renewable electricity and beyond with green hydrogen

European Energy’s expansion into green hydrogen marks yet another milestone in Denmark’s progress with green hydrogen. The company is also advancing a green methanol facility in Kassø in the Southern part of Denmark and is expected to produce its first methanol by the end of 2024. Together, these initiatives underscore European Energy’s commitment to innovating within the green energy sector, providing sustainable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing energy challenges.

These are just some of Denmark’s announced hydrogen projects. Through collaboration and partnerships across sectors, solutions and borders, Denmark has set aims to become a frontrunner in green hydrogen.
