Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm is ready to supply green power

When the light is on, the mobile phone is charging and the radio is playing, the electricity used for it in Denmark and Germany will very soon be greener. With Vattenfall’s establishment of Kriegers Flak Offshore Wind Farm there will be more climate-friendly electricity in the cables and chords. Vattenfall, who is responsible for the establishment and operation of the wind farm, has installed part of it and obtained the necessary permits and is thus ready to supply renewable energy from Kriegers Flak located in the Baltic Sea.

Kriegers Flak is the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark to date, and when all 72 offshore wind turbines have been erected, the park will deliver 50 per cent more electricity than Horns Rev 3, until now the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark.

“It is a milestone for Danish wind energy that Kriegers Flak, as the largest Danish offshore wind farm to date, can now use the Baltic Sea's brisk wind to produce green electricity. Green energy is crucial for the climate-neutral society of the future, and with the power from Kriegers Flak's offshore wind turbines, Denmark is once again proving to be a pioneer in the use of wind energy,” said Danish Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities, Dan Jørgensen.

The first power from Kriegers Flak is expected to be delivered to the electricity grid at the end of January or the beginning of February 2021. Hereafter, the wind turbines are expected to be connected to the electricity grid on an ongoing bases until the entire wind farm is connected. The offshore wind farm must be fully connected by 31 December 2021.

The Danish Energy Agency has granted Vattenfall an electricity production permit and issued an electricity production license to Vattenfall for Kriegers Flak Offshore Wind Farm. The permits to be able to supply the green electricity are valid for 25 years from the time of grid connection, which is the time when the first kWh is delivered to the collective electricity grid from the offshore wind farm.

About Kriegers Flak

Kriegers Flak Offshore Wind Farm consists of 72 wind turbines of the type Siemens Gamesa 8.0-167 with the possibility to increase the power (power boost) up to 8.4 MW.

The park can together deliver a total power of up to 604.8 MW and can produce green electricity corresponding to the annual consumption from approx. 600,000 Danish households. However, the park may deliver a maximum power of 600 MW measured at the connection point.

It was on the basis of the Danish energy policy agreement from March 2012 that Kriegers Flak Offshore Wind Farm was sent out for tender. Vattenfall won the tender in November 2016 with a bid price of 37.2 øre / kWh, which at that time was the world's lowest price for an offshore wind farm.
