With the opening of Energy Hub Holstebro, Denmark’s first officially designated energy park is now a reality. The inauguration marks the beginning of a new chapter for large-scale green energy and Power-to-X production in Northwest Jutland.

Located next to the transformer station in Idomlund near Holstebro, the new energy park spans 428 hectares and is the result of close collaboration between Holstebro Municipality and a number of national and international partners. The ambition is to develop the area into a key hub for the production of green hydrogen and other fossil-free fuels.

A strategic centre for Power-to-X

Covering 428 hectares near the Idomlund transformer station, Energy Hub Holstebro is strategically situated to receive green electricity from offshore wind farms in the North Sea. This location provides optimal conditions for converting renewable energy into green hydrogen and other fossil-free fuels. The park is intended to function as both a national and international hub for PtX development, enabling large-scale production of sustainable energy carriers and supporting Denmark’s long-term climate and energy goals.

Developed by Holstebro Municipality in partnership with national and international energy companies, the hub benefits from a strong public-private framework. The site’s designation as a state-appointed energy park ensures coordinated planning processes and opens new opportunities for infrastructure development, investment, and industrial activity linked to the green transition.

First project already under development

The first project within Energy Hub Holstebro is led by Skovgaard Energy in partnership with Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo Corporation. The partners have submitted plans to build a 150 MW Power-to-X facility that will produce green hydrogen for use in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. The facility will cover 3.3 hectares and forms part of the broader North Sea Hydrogen initiative.

The project will draw on renewable electricity from nearby offshore wind installations and biogas from Maabjerg Bioenergy, supporting the creation of synthetic fuels for the aviation sector. Sumitomo Corporation, which operates a large global fleet of leased aircraft, is expected to play a key role in the commercialisation of these fuels.

As additional projects are developed, the energy park will require supportive infrastructure, including the deployment of hydrogen pipeline connections to facilitate transport and scalability. Establishing this infrastructure will be critical to enabling the full potential of Energy Hub Holstebro and securing long-term investment in the region’s green energy ecosystem.

Energy Hub Holstebro

Energy Hub Holstebro is Denmark’s first state-appointed energy park, located in Idomlund near Holstebro and covering 428 hectares.

The park is strategically situated next to the Idomlund transformer station, where electricity from North Sea offshore wind farms is brought onshore—creating optimal conditions for large-scale Power-to-X production.

The first project under development is a 150 MW facility that will produce green hydrogen for use in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The hub is established by Holstebro Municipality in collaboration with national and international partners, including Everfuel, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Skovgaard Energy, Plug Power (USA), RWE (Germany), and Sumitomo Corporation (Japan).
