CS WIND Offshore signs transition piece contracts with Vattenfall
CS WIND Offshore has entered two contracts to manufacture 112 transition pieces for Vattenfall’s Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms located in the German North Sea. The Nordlicht wind farm area is situated 85 km north of the island of Borkum and comprises two distinct sites: Nordlicht 1 with an approximate capacity of 980 megawatts and Nordlicht 2 with 630 megawatts.
These contracts mark another significant milestone for CS WIND Offshore, which boasts an extensive history of delivering quality products to Vattenfall. Recently, CS WIND Offshore fabricated 41 transition pieces for Vattenfall’s Vesterhav Syd and Nord offshore wind farms in Denmark, which were inaugurated in autumn 2024.
“We are delighted to be part of Vattenfall’s cutting-edge Nordlicht projects. These contracts exemplify the trust and cooperation between our two companies, laying a solid foundation for successful project execution,” stated Hee-Joung Moon, CEO of CS WIND Offshore.
Pending a final investment decision, which is expected in 2025, offshore construction for Nordlicht 1 and 2 is anticipated to begin in 2026, with full operational status expected by 2028. Vattenfall is developing and building the Nordlicht cluster, with BASF as a key partner owning 49% of the projects. Upon completion, the electricity production from these sites is projected to total approximately 6 terawatt hours (TWh) per year, equating to the electricity consumption of 1.7 million German households.
Regarding CS WIND Offshore’s selection as the supplier of transition pieces for the Nordlicht projects, Mats Vikholm, Head of Project Delivery & Engineering, Vattenfall commented:
“The transition pieces are a vital component of the Nordlicht wind farms, ensuring the seamless integration of turbines and foundations. By partnering with CS WIND Offshore, we are securing high-quality solutions that align with our commitment to delivering reliable, renewable energy for millions of households. This collaboration highlights the importance of strong partnerships in advancing the energy transition.”
Manufacturing of the 68 transition pieces for Nordlicht 1 and the 44 transition pieces for Nordlicht 2 will commence at CS WIND Offshore’s production site at Port of Aalborg, Denmark, starting medio 2025. Recent, considerable investments ensure that the production facilities are enhanced to optimize factory output and enable storage of more transition pieces and other components.
“I applaud our team’s dedication in securing these agreements, which underscores our ability to meet our clients’ needs for transition pieces designed for +15MW wind turbines at our Aalborg facility. We remain committed to supporting job retention in Aalborg, where we benefit from a robust wind industry with strong local partnerships,” stated Hee-Joung Moon, CEO of CS WIND Offshore.
