Agreement reached for a Danish hydrogen backbone to Germany
With a broad political agreement, Denmark has revived plans to establish a hydrogen pipeline connecting the country to Germany. Backed by a state loan and operational subsidies from the Danish government, the initiative aims to enable the transport of green hydrogen by 2030.

Green hydrogen is seen as a crucial component in Denmark’s renewable energy ambitions, with the potential to drive local economic growth and strengthen European energy security. The newly approved agreement between the Danish government and a broad coalition of political parties aims to accelerate hydrogen production and infrastructure development, leveraging Denmark’s offshore wind resources.
To support this, the Danish state will provide €991 million and up to €1.11 billion in operational subsidies for the establishment of the hydrogen pipeline from Esbjerg to the German border. Additionally, the minimum booking requirement for hydrogen transport has been lowered to 0.5 GW, making it more accessible for hydrogen producers.
“We need to get the ball rolling on hydrogen, and that requires further assistance. At present, the market cannot achieve this alone, so we are addressing that barrier. I look forward to the day when we can produce green hydrogen at scale and export it to Germany and the rest of Europe. This marks a new milestone. Green hydrogen can support green electricity production, reduce CO₂ emissions, and strengthen Europe’s energy security. That is why I am pleased that we have reached a broad political agreement to kickstart development and build a solid foundation for the future. This is just the beginning, not the final destination.” Lars Aagaard, Danish Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities

First step towards a cross-border hydrogen connection
The agreement focuses on a pipeline route running from Esbjerg, in the western part of Denmark, through Egtved to the German border, known as the “Syvtal” (the Seven-Route). However, the political parties involved maintain a long-term vision of expanding Denmark’s hydrogen infrastructure. Future plans include connections further north to Ll. Torup and eastward to Fredericia, forming a full Jutland hydrogen backbone.
The Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Utilities has initiated a study on expanding the hydrogen network further. The government aims to ensure that the first stage of the pipeline does not hinder broader hydrogen infrastructure development.
The hydrogen pipeline plays an important role in Denmark’s green energy transition, offering a crucial link between Danish offshore wind resources and European hydrogen demand. As the project advances, it will play a key role in enhancing energy independence, reducing CO₂ emissions, and positioning Denmark as a hub in the green hydrogen economy.
With more than 20 hydrogen projects already on the drawing board, and a national strategy aiming for 4-6 GW electrolysis capacity towards 2030, Denmark has laid plans to accelerate the production of green hydrogen and green fuels for the future.
