Small Wind Turbines from Vestas Will Provide Power to Africa

Only 35 percent of residents in Africa have access to everyday electricity and the prospect of expanding the established electricity network is distant. Therefore, installing so-called mini-grids with local production of electricity is a necessity.

The second part of the Vestas project consists of developing a complete new wind turbine that is smaller and cheaper than the average turbines. It has to be able to compete with other solutions such as solar cells.

As such, we are not talking about solution in wind energy but rather an integrated energy solution that combines different technologies, says Ivan Nygaard, the senior researcher at DTU, the online newspaper Ingeniøren.

In a press release from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, the executive vice-president at Business Unit Power Solutions at Vestas, Anders Vedel states:

With the right technology, we believe wind can be a central part of the power supply in rural districts like the ones in Africa. We are therefore delighted that our project is among the ones selected. Vestas has a vast experience with the development of new markets like the African continent and, in collaboration with our partners in the project, we look forward to exploring market opportunities in this new segment – while supporting a sustainable future for the rural districts as the same time.

Besides Vestas and DanidaDTU and SustainableEnergy are a part of the project, writes Ingeniøren.
