White Water Viborg will become the first sports facility of its kind in Denmark and with international character. The partnership White Water Viborg is in charge of developing, establishing and launching the sports facility that will be constructed with an artificial river used for kayak and rafting. The river water will be taken from the lake Søndersø, where the water will be circulated back to the lake, well aerated, a factor which will benefit both the water quality and piscifauna in the lake.

Technical and environmental consequences

Orbicon is technical and environmental consultant on the project, and participates on the pilot study on the White Water Centre. The facility will be situated close to The Academy of Physical Education in Viborg, Denmark.

Orbicon’s job is to provide Viborg Municipality with information on the project’s long and short term environmental impact, in order to find the best possible location for the White Water Centre. 

- At first Orbicon’s role was to clarify some of the technical challenges, as e.g. the location of the White Water Centre. This has, among other things, resulted in a change of location compared to the initial idea. Since the location came in place, we have been in the process of seeking the authorities’ environmental approval to clarify if it is permitted to place the centre next to the lake Søndersø. When this issue is settled, we will begin the pilot project on the kayak and rafting river, tells Morten Korsgaard Pedersen, Project Manager in Orbicon.

Intensive cooperation

During the last months an intensive teamwork has taken place between Orbicon and the developer, the partnership White Water Viborg, which is a part of Viborg Innovation Fond.

- In White Water Viborg we have had cooperation with Orbicon for several years regarding the location and construction etc. of the river. Through the last few months, the cooperation has intensified, since Morten Korsgaard Pedersen from Orbicon, participates in a working group with representatives from the municipality’s environment- and development department. The group is in the process of examining the exact location of the man-made river and minimisation of the environmental impact in order to pay maximum regards to the surrounding nature, states Chairwoman from White Water Viborg, Inge Bak.

- Furthermore Orbicon contributes to keep the project in constant progress, says Inge Bak.

White Water Viborg will appeal to both athletes and adventurous tourists looking for physical activities in the nature.
