Founded in the spirit of Nordic collaboration by three cooperatives, VikingDanmark, Växa, and Faba, we are pioneers in breeding for health and production traits in a balanced focus. Since the 1980s, we have bred for better cow health that supplements profitable milk production across all our breeding programmes – long before this was a common practice.

Our breeding is based on extensive, real-life data from commercial herds in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden, where health and performance data of VikingHolstein, VikingRed, VikingJersey, crossbreeds, and more have been recorded for generations. Farmers, veterinarians, hoof trimmers, and other industry experts are also committed to registering data from each cow.

Today, over 800,000 cows are recorded annually in our data system: the Nordic Total Merit Index (NTM), the world’s most complete total merit index. This allows us to breed healthy, profitable cows with the world’s highest lifetime production of milk and solids and the lowest use of antibiotics and hormones.

Our latest challenge is developing genetic solutions to lower cattle methane emissions. We are realising this by investing in high-value scientific projects in partnership with research institutions – such as the CFIT System, developed in collaboration with Aarhus University.

With data and science-driven genetic tools, such as the Saved Feed Index, farmers can adjust to shifting regulations by breeding more sustainable cows with fewer methane emissions. This way, farmers can sustainably meet the global demand for higher-quality milk and meat while improving their bottom lines.
