Climate change adaptation is getting increasingly more relevant and the urban landscape holds a great opportunity in rethinking the landscape for the future climate. The project is part of a greater ideology, where climate change adaptations are incorporated into a larger modernization of the city’s public spaces. This case clearly demonstrates how we can rethink our public spaces to deal with cloudbursts to minimize water damages and at the same time create meaningful spaces for the users.

Playful adaptation

The schoolyard has been transformed with little hills, lowered spaces to obtain rainwater and an above surface water transportation system. The water is led to underground membranes that can storage up to 1200 m3 before it is infiltrated into a greater cloud bursting system under the road. Furthermore, the schoolyard has gained an arboretum with more than 100 different trees and bushes from around the world, including Europe, Asia and North America.

A modern take on climate change adaptation

Reshaping the landscape to infiltrate, transport and storage rainwater as part of a more unique and playful landscape is a modern view on the problems we are facing. By considering the water management as part of the attraction of the schoolyard, the area has achieved various innovative and curious spaces for the children to explore.

The school children have gained creative spaces for moving, playing and learning in the exciting landscape and the lush green spaces is used as part of the school curriculum.
