Challenge

In the shipping industry, the ongoing lack of reliable third-party estimates for sustainable fuel costs significantly impedes progress towards greener alternatives. This critical gap is highlighted in a recent report by the World Economic Forum and BCG, which points out the absence of transparent, region-specific forecasts for fuel production costs. This deficiency leaves stakeholders grappling with substantial uncertainty when comparing the feasibility of sustainable fuels with traditional fossil fuels. Such uncertainty obstructs crucial decision-making for fuel producers, financial backers, and end-users, thereby stalling the industry’s shift towards sustainable practices.

Solution

To address this challenge, the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping has introduced the Fuel Cost Calculator (FCC). The innovative tool provides transparent predictions of regional fuel production costs. These calculations are based on a comprehensive set of assumptions derived from a blend of public literature, extensive industry knowledge, and expert insights.

By offering credible, third-party cost estimates, the Fuel Cost Calculator empowers stakeholders to assess sustainable maritime fuel options on a like-for-like basis against fossil fuels.

The FCC also allows you to download an Excel-version of the tool where you can see all underlying assumptions supported by the Center as well as input your own assumptions to test them.

Discover the Fuel Cost Calculator

With the Fuel Cost Calculator, you will be able to calculate the bottom-up production cost of sustainable fuels and benchmark them against fossil fuels.

All calculations are based on the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping‘s set of assumptions that are derived from a blend of public literature, extensive industry knowledge, and expert insights.

“The Center was established in 2020, and since the beginning, we have openly shared our research and knowledge to inform and inspire transition pathways. Now we are taking it to the next level. With the Fuel Cost Calculator, we are opening our toolbox and assumptions to allow others to leverage and further develop our insights,” said Bo Cerup-Simonsen, CEO of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping.
