Lisbjerg, located in the northern part of Aarhus Municipality, is an urban development project in which a former field area has been transformed into a residential area, based on sustainable principles. A key objective of the project is to demonstrate that sustainable urban development is achievable on market terms. The area will be characterised as a high-density neighborhood with a focus on smart infrastructure in order to reduce the CO2 emissions of the neighbourhood.

SUSTAINABLE MINDSET
In order to promote circular thinking among residents, as well as in contractors’ choice of materials, the municipality has published inspirational catalogues. The catalogues are now used in all municipal tenders on the Lisbjerg building sites. The municipality has worked on the development plan over a multi-year time period, involving citizens through various activities such as workshops. In the future, citizen participation will be prioritized with the ambition of inspiring residents to support and adopt circular principles into their everyday lives.

FINANCING
The project has a total municipal construction budget of an estimated 2.5 billion DKK. In addition, private investments amount in the double-digit billion range over a total 60-year development period. The project is funded by the Municipality of Aarhus through sale of construction rights to private investors, social housing organisations and businesses.

FACTS:

• It is estimated that up to 25,000 people and thousands of jobs will move to the new neighbourhood.
• The project was started in 2014, and the district will be established over a period of 60 years.
• The total urban development area will contain up to DKK 1 million square meters of housing and 250,000 square meters for commercial purposes.
