Challenge

Juul Frost Architects has made a feasibility study about the decarbonisation of schools in Warsaw, exploring the transformation of schools into future-proof, sustainable learning environments through a holistic approach that integrates urban, physical, social, and educational needs alongside technical requirements. explores the transformation of schools into future-proof, sustainable learning environments through a holistic approach that integrates urban, physical, social, and educational needs alongside technical requirements.

The project addresses challenges that a school building faces, i.e. overcrowding, poor indoor climate, scarce social spaces, lack of water and energy management systems.

Solution

Key recommendations include the introduction of intelligent energy efficiency solutions, i.e. daylight optimisation, improved insulation, calibrated water pumps, data-driven monitoring, together with the installation of renewable energy sources, such as solar roofs and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.

Local partner: City of Warsaw

Warsaw is the capital city of Poland, with over 200 schools which require renovation and adaptation to the changing physical and geopolitical climate. These schools were constructed as a part of a Polish programme *1000 schools for another 1000 years*. As a result, a set of recommendations for one school is applicable to the remaining schools constructed as a result of this programme.

Result

The recommendations allow for decarbonising similar schools and enhancing their resilience against climate change, ensuring healthier, more efficient educational environments that will be resilient towards climate and geopolitical crises. The recommendations will be a supplement to the Warsaw Green Building Standard.
