Danish Salmon is a revolutionary project, where the entire growth of the salmon takes place on land using OxyGuard measuring, monitoring and control equipment for recirculating aquaculture systems. The aim is to achieve sustainable production of salmon without damaging the environment.

This is a significant advance from, and indeed improvement on, the methods in use all over the world at the moment, where the last stage of salmon growth takes place in sea cages. Despite considerable effort and expense to minimise any impact on the environment, sea cage production does result in some undesirable emission.

There is a general trend in the Aquaculture industry towards the use of closed recirculation systems, where the water is cleaned and re-used. Much pioneer work in this field has taken place in Denmark, where there now is expertise that is being used to make the Danish Salmon project viable.

The new Danish Salmon production facility in Hirtshals, northern Jutland, Denmark, is nearing completion. The facility will initially produce 2000 tonnes of salmon a year. The salmon will be raised in water taken from the Skagerak, which is then cleaned and re-circulated. The only water that leaves the plant is through evaporation!
