Billund Biorefinery Wins EU’s Environmental Award 2014
4 July 2014
The lighthouse project Billund Biorefinery has been recognised with EU’s Environmental Award for “Sustainable Processes” based on its great perspectives to contribute to sustainable resource use and energy supply.
“The award encourages everyone who perceive the importance of the wastewater sector in the resource strategy of the future. Billund Biorefinery extends the current Grindsted Renseanlæg (Grinsted Sewage Treatment plant), which treats both wastewater and household waste. Billund BioRefinery will include a number of new technologies, among others a new solution for continuous thermal hydrolysis, which is a world news item, explained CEO of Billund Vand Ole P. Johnsen and continued:
“The technologies enable us to increase our production of biogas and agricultural fertiliser, while also optimising the aquatic environment significantly. In addition, it will be possible to produce bioplastics and very pure fertiliser products. The goal is to produce twice as much energy as we consume”.
Department Head of Krüger Ole Singkjær followed up:
“Billund Biorefinery must serve as an international display window for advanced Danish wastewater technology and the prize strengthens the high international attention surrounding the project. The close collaboration with utilities such as Billund Vand is a crucial precondition for a company such as Krüger to increase export and create new jobs”, he said.
