We are on the right track in Denmark and we are currently working towards recycling the more challenging and dirty plastic waste without compromising the quality.
In Aage Vestergaard Larsen we think that the necessary knowhow for reprocessing plastic waste to new raw material in a high quality – quality instead of quantity – is present in Denmark, and that this fact should be used to the benefit of the environment as well as the competitiveness of the Danish Plastic Industry.
The discussion and even mockery about the opportunities to reprocess dirty plastic waste is something we hear on seminars as well as social media sites. This however does not benefit the process much, when we see that the recycling businesses are becoming better in handling, processing and recycling the dirtier plastic waste.
Even though all challenges are not solved the fact that it is possible to reprocess dirty plastic is proven daily by Danish recycling businesses. At the moment Aage Vestergaard Larsen are receiving dirty plastic in the form of:
80.000 trashcans and environmental boxes: A municipality is changing sorting system and are therefore changing their trashcans and environmental boxes. The first trashcans are already grinded and reprocessed to a new raw material in a very high quality to the Danish Plastic Industry.
Containers with different plastic products: These containers consist of PE from Tornved Genbrugsplads. We do a minor presorting before the plastic waste is put in our production lines.
Plastic from different recycling businesses: We receive on a trial basis containers with discarded plastic products. The sorting process is on a trial basis in our production so that we can examine how much of the plastic waste is able to be reprocessed after one sorting process with the high quality we expect in our product.
High quality is the core in recycling plastic! With high quality we mean that the product (the new raw material) is environmentally and economy sustainable on both long and short term. This means that the product made of recycled plastic must be recycled again and again. Surly that is Circular economy!
The development can and will go even faster when businesses join forces to develop new solutions and models of cooperation and work together throughput the value chain with focus on the challenge: to increase the degree of recycling of plastic in Denmark significantly!
