Port of Grenaa Introduces 2025 Strategy: Port of Partnerships for a Green World

Among other things, this means that the port introduces a new green core segment, Energy & Innovation, and that procurements will be channelled in a more sustainable direction.

With its new strategy, Port of Partnerships for A Green World, the port builds on a period characterised by great development and progress, to which the record earnings of the recent two years attest:

”During our previous strategy period, we set a strong course for the port's future by focusing hard on development in seven selected core segments. Our vision today remains to create growth for companies and society alike. However, today the green transition has made it to the agenda, the world is changing and so is Port of Grenaa”, tells Henrik Carstensen, CEO, Grenaa Havn A/S, continuing:

”As one of Denmark's large business and industrial ports, we see it as our commitment to contribute to reach the Danish and European goal for full climate neutrality by 2050. That's why, with our new strategy, we want to increase focus on supporting green growth. As a result, we must dare to think innovatively. We must work smarter, and we must contribute to the development of new green technologies.

Sustainability Externally and Internally in the Organisation
Port of Grenaa has distributed its sustainability efforts on seven of UN's Sustainable Development Goals in business sustainability and organisational sustainability. Business sustainability concerns the port's commercial market approach offering sustainable solutions to the port's customers, strengthening their core business. Organisational sustainability concerns the port's internal operations where the port as an organisation will be more green while focusing on social responsibility and skills development of its employees.

”The strategy includes various specific objectives which we are ready to implement now. One of the key initiatives is to invest at least 10 per cent of Port of Grenaa's annual profit in green solutions, such as access to green electricity throughout the port and invest in sustainable equipment."

Change and Improve with Energy & Innovation
With its new core segment, Energy & Innovation, the port aims to establish smart solutions to make logistics run more smoothly and the energy resources to last longer.

”In our opinion, a port catching the new technologies will be a better port to its partners. As an example, we have recently invested DKK 25 million in a smart Liebherr crane. The crane is equipped with smart automated technology and is currently in Rostock for a conversion to be partly driven by electricity”, Henrik Carstensen tells.

Test Platform for the Green Energy of the Future
With Energy & Innovation, the port aims to join more globally oriented partners in terms of the environment and recovery but also to become a large-scale test platform for new types of energy, so-called Power-to-X:

Port of Grenaa is already known as one of the leading ports in Denmark for wind turbine projects. We have also worked to further and develop the transport chain. We want to make our experience in these two areas available to the development of new green energy which will be decisive to the transition of the entire transport industry”, Henrik Carstensen notes.

Just before the turn of the year, the Board of Grenaa Havn A/S has decided to invest towards 100 million DKK in a historic port extension which is expected to be finished by January 2023. The port area will be organised flexibly and upgraded to 18MW shore power to be available for large projects across the port's core segments, such as pre-assembly area and base service centre for Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm and testing of Power-to-X.
