Denmark and France have signed a strategic partnership to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The agreement was signed during the Danish state visit to France by the Foreign Ministers of the two countries, with the Danish Royal Couple and the French President Emmanuel Macron in attendance.

Their renewed partnership emphasizes cooperation in the fields of energy and climate change, with both nations striving towards achieving climate neutrality by 2050. In line with the European Green Deal, France and Denmark are focused on decarbonising energy production while ensuring the integration of renewable energy technologies.

The partnership outlines continued collaboration in offshore wind energy and carbon capture and storage—areas in which both nations have significant expertise. This partnership also reaffirms their joint commitment to reducing emissions and implementing the Paris Agreement’s ambitious climate targets. The two governments will continue to promote the transition to sustainable energy systems, with a shared aim of reducing Europe’s dependence on fossil fuels and strengthening its competitive edge in the global economy.

“We will continue to work together on accelerating the global transition, in key sectors such as energy and transport,” stated the agreement. “Our goal is to strengthen the EU’s position as a modern, resource-efficient, circular and competitive economy working towards climate neutrality by 2050 and negative emissions thereafter.”

A new letter of intent in green energy cooperation

In April 2025, France and Denmark will sign a new Letter of Intent aimed at further bolstering their energy collaboration. This letter will build on the progress made since their 2018 Declaration of Intent, reaffirming their shared vision for a green transition that aligns with European climate goals. The partnership will also extend to new green energy initiatives, including biodiversity protection, focusing on reversing biodiversity loss and implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

The agreement highlights that both countries are determined to combat climate change and protect the environment through joint actions, with particular attention given to sustainable water management and reducing plastic pollution.

“France and Denmark are committed to halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030, to the swift and full implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF),” the agreement outlines.

Continued leadership in renewable energy

Through this strengthened partnership, France and Denmark reaffirm their position as drivers in the renewable energy sector. The two countries continue to share expertise and technological solutions to advance green energy initiatives across Europe, particularly focusing on offshore wind power as a cornerstone of their energy future.

The collaboration reflects a commitment to not only meet Europe’s environmental and climate goals but to set a global standard for sustainable energy solutions. By focusing on shared priorities, such as offshore wind and carbon capture technologies, France and Denmark aim to foster a future of energy production that reduces emissions, enhances energy security, and supports economic growth.

This agreement also signals the growing role of international cooperation in accelerating the green transition. As both countries move towards climate neutrality, their efforts will complement broader European and international frameworks aimed at achieving net-zero emissions and protecting natural ecosystems.

By working closely with industry leaders and policymakers, France and Denmark are well-positioned to drive forward innovative green energy solutions, contributing to Europe’s energy security and playing a central role in the global effort to combat climate change.
