Denmark supports the largest wind farm in Ukraine

With financial backing and technological solutions, Denmark has struck a deal to support Ukraine's reconstruction of its largest wind energy project, the Tyligulska wind park, led by Vestas and DTEK. The project aims to strengthen Ukraine's energy security and contribute to a greener and more resilient energy infrastructure in Europe.

Denmark has committed financial and technological support to accelerate Ukraine’s renewable energy transition. A financial guarantee from Denmark’s Export and Investment Fund (EIFO) will support the expansion of the Tyligulska wind park in southern Ukraine. The project is part of broader efforts to rebuild Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and enhance its energy independence amidst the ongoing conflict.

Danish support for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure

Denmark’s government, through EIFO, is providing a DKK 3 billion (EUR 400 million) financial guarantee to support the construction of Ukraine’s largest wind energy project. The funding is part of a larger strategy to rebuild critical infrastructure in Ukraine, with a focus on sustainable energy solutions.

The financial guarantee aligns with Denmark’s broader efforts to promote the use of renewable energy in conflict-affected regions. Announcing the agreement at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Danish Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, Morten Bødskov, emphasized the strategic role of renewable energy in Ukraine’s reconstruction:

“Denmark’s green strengths have the potential to make a decisive contribution to Ukraine’s reconstruction and, by extension, its fight for freedom. With a substantial financial guarantee, together with EIFO and Vestas, we are ensuring the country’s critical infrastructure, which is crucial in the context of the ongoing war. All of this aims to replace Ukraine’s dark present with a greener future.” Morten Bødskov, Denmark’s Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs.

EIFO CEO Peder Lundquist highlighted that the initiative is one of several projects supported by the fund in Ukraine:

“This is a great opportunity for EIFO to support renewable energy in Ukraine, strengthening the country’s energy security and creating a greener future in a war-torn nation. We are proud to contribute to the largest wind energy project ever undertaken in Ukraine. EIFO has now financed over 15 Ukrainian projects in collaboration with Danish businesses across critical sectors, including energy, water, and agriculture.” Peder Lundquist, CEO at Denmark’s Export and Investment Fund (EIFO)

Ukraine’s largest wind energy project

The Tyligulska wind park is located between Mykolaiv and Odessa and, once completed, will have a total capacity of 498 MW. This includes the installation of 83 V162-6.2 MW turbines from Danish wind giant Vestas, making it the largest wind energy project in Ukraine to date.

Vestas will supply 64 turbines for the second phase of the park, building on the first phase, which was commissioned in 2023. The project is being developed in partnership with the Ukrainian energy company DTEK, with support from Danish financial institutions and companies.

Henrik Andersen, President and CEO of Vestas, described the partnership as a key step in rebuilding Ukraine’s energy system:

“We are proud to expand our partnership with DTEK and to deliver our technology solutions to the Tyligulska project that will power Ukraine’s energy system. I want to thank DTEK for showing visionary leadership and authorities in Denmark, Ukraine and EU for their strong support to this ambitious project that will help strengthen Ukraine’s energy security,” Henrik Andersen, President and CEO of Vestas

The wind park is expected to provide electricity to approximately 900,000 households when fully operational. Vestas will also oversee maintenance through a 20-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreement, ensuring efficient operation throughout the park’s lifespan.

Strengthening European energy security

The expansion of renewable energy infrastructure in Ukraine contributes to broader European efforts to enhance energy security. The integration of sustainable energy sources helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels and builds resilience in energy systems across the region.

DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko stated that the project demonstrates the role of international cooperation in building a stable and sustainable energy supply:

“By investing in renewable energy, we are not only addressing Ukraine’s immediate needs but also contributing to a stronger and more secure energy future for Europe,” DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko

The Tyligulska wind park, expected to be operational by the end of 2026, represents a critical milestone in Ukraine’s energy transition. Through partnerships with Danish companies and financial institutions, Ukraine is advancing its renewable energy capabilities and contributing to the region’s energy security.
