The technology of Danish catalysis company Haldor Topsøe has been chosen for the world's first refinery to produce green diesel and aviation fuel without the use of crude oil.

The refinery will be placed in the Netherlands and established by Amsterdam-based SkyNRG.

Aviation company KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is strategic partner in the refinery project and has committed to purchasing 75,00 tons of the green aviation fuel per year over a 10-year period, inform Haldor Topsøe in a statement.

The green fuel SAF, sustainable aviation fuel is simply put, produced in the same way as traditional oil products, but instead of crude, bio-material like chipwood, recycled cooking oil and other industry waste products are used.

SAF will reduce CO2 emissions by at least 85 per cent compared to conventional aviation fuel.

The coming Dutch refinery in the city Delfzijl is the first of a number of planned similar refineries, which SkyNRG will establish close to the large flight clusters around the world, with direct pipelines to airports.
