Energy shortages, price explosions, rising interest rates, and a drop in development aid by almost 25 percent. The unwanted perfect storm has hit countries in the emerging economies. And yet, there is huge business potential – if investors can be attracted.

This roundtable will discuss what is needed for private finance to help close the critical financing gap in emerging markets and developing economies. You will discuss whether the right financial instruments are at hand for the world’s most challenging markets, or if new ones must be created. You will also discuss how donor countries, DFIs, and philanthropic capital can work in concert with commercial investors to open up emerging markets.

The risks are real, but so are the opportunities.

Topics for discussion

  • Aid is down 25 percent. Does that create a vacuum that private capital can fill – or does it remove the very conditions that made investment viable?
  • Emerging markets carry real risks. Are instruments with guarantees, blended finance and concessional lending fit for today’s market? Or is it time to reinvent our financial instruments?
  • Is habitual thinking a barrier for philanthropic money, private risk capital, and public support to align their efforts within the green transition in emerging markets?
  • What will make Europe willing to step up and take the role of the climate financing leader in emerging markets?
