Yesterday at the "Cities4Climate meeting" in San Francisco, the board of the C40 Cities network decided on Copenhagen as the host city for the C40 Mayors Summit next year. The summit is the only event that gathers the mayors and other city delegates from around 80 world’s mega cities as well as 15 smaller ”innovator cities”, among these Copenhagen. Together, the C40 cities have 650 million inhabitants and account for 25 percent of the world GDP.

10 cities offered themselves as host cities and, in the end, the choice was between Washington DC, Dubai and Copenhagen.

See the green transition with your own eyes
”The city of Copenhagen highlighted the fact that there you can see the green transition with your own eyes. At the same time, the mayors can experience a big city that exhibits strong economic growth and great quality of life. This was the core of the Copenhagen story and that was decisive for the outcome”, said Simon Hansen, Regional Director of C40 in London commented to the Danish newspaper Politiken.

In Copenhagen, the mayors will focus on practical solutions and a climate scheme that will enable the cities to reach the Paris Agreement targets.

The natural choice
Being a pioneer in bicycle transportation, environmental-friendly district heating and with a target of becoming the first CO2 neutral capital in the world by 2025, Copenhagen is the natural choice as the host of the C40 Mayors Summit, the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen believes:

”I am very happy and proud that the world’s largest cities have selected Copenhagen as the host for the C40 climate summit in 2019. It is a strong recognition of our climate efforts. The summit will put climate efforts on the top of the agenda and inspire the entire world with Copenhagen’s green solutions”, he said to Realdania, one of the C40 Cities partners and sponsors.
