Aarhus Vand implements a state-of-the-art water control system to address flood management and prevent wastewater from overflowing into lakes, streams and bays through optimal control of the basins, sewerage plants and water treatment plants.

In 2005, the water quality in the municipality of Aarhus was unsatisfactory. Discharges from sewage treatment plants and 75 sewers strained the water quality at times of downpour, and with an outlook of 20-40% increased downfall in the future, as well as increased cloudbursts and rising water levels, the municipality decided to take action and implement solutions to address these challenges.

Between 2005 and today, Aarhus has improved the quality of the water hygiene in the receiving waters through the so-called Aarhus River project to support the opportunities for recreational use of Lake Brabrand, the Aarhus River and the Port of Aarhus. The decision was driven by the Water Framework Directive and the Bathing Water Directive, adapting the planned solution to the expected climate change scenario.

As an integrated and pivotal part of the Aarhus River project, Arhus Vand has implemented one of the world’s most advanced water control systems, which is able to monitor the entire wastewater system of Aarhus through integrated real-time control.

This enables monitorting and coordination of all installations from a single point, allowing efficient and flexible operations, which, during rainfall events, is a valuable solution thanks to the integrated controls and an early warning system. This will improve the water hygiene, also during expected climate change scenarios like intense rainfall and rising sea levels. Overall, the system involves improved rainfall monitoring, integrated control of sewer and wastewater treatment plants and early warning of water quality of receiving waters.
