In Aalborg, a vibrant Danish city, we are proud of leading the way in sustainability and the green transition. If sustainability is to sustain, it needs to become a natural part of how we think and live our everyday lives. This we work for every day.

The Sustainable Kindergarten is Aalborg Municipality’s most ambitious and most sustainable kindergarten ever, located in Karolinelund near the city centre. The Kindergarten is nestled within former amusement park, Karolinelund, and has been designed by its architects to maintain connections with surroundings: there is little distinction between ‘inside and out’. The belief behind the project is that good design for children can create spaces that are challenging, vibrant, and natural, which promote both play and quiet.

This construction is unique in Denmark, environmentally certified (under the DGNB scheme), with the ambition to achieve the highest rating possible. The DGNB is a seal of quality for sustainable construction.

There are many green areas surrounding the Kindergarten, and also within it giving children access to nature. The space has been designed to be used by groups of varying sizes and to encourage spontaneous and planned activities. The needs of teachers and staff are also considered in the design of the building and landscape. Artwork from the Aalborg Municipality Art Foundation has also been included – artwork being necessary under the DGNB platinum rating. The construction and design of the kindergarten approached sustainability holistically throughout the whole building process, and it continues right through to future users.

The Kindergarten has room for 90 children between the ages of 3-5 covering a total area of 867 square metres.
