Since 2007, when the first biking action plan was passed in the Municipality of Aarhus, the city has aimed to continuously improve conditions for cyclists in both the city and suburban areas. One of the major efforts is to create an interconnected network of bicycle paths with explicit cycling streets and “cycling superhighways”.
CYCLING STREETS
In 2016, 11 streets have been transformed into bicycle streets in the centre of Aarhus. Those streets are reserved for cyclists. Other vehicles are allowed, but traffic takes place on the cyclists’ terms, which e.g. entails that cars are not allowed to move faster than cyclists.
CYCLING SUPERHIGHWAYS
A cycling superhighway is constructed to increase cyclist's accessibility and comfort in the traffic on longer distances. The aim of creating super bike lanes is mainly to improve conditions for bike commuters and therefore make the bicycle more attractive compared to taking the car or public transport.
In a few years, the Municipality of Aarhus will have a completed network of cycling superhighways. The first cycling superhighways between the city center and Skejby and Lisbjerg was finished and have been in use since spring of 2017.
