Like most other local authorities around the world, Malmö is experiencing ever increasing waste amounts in line with the economic development in society. At SYSAV’s waste-to-energy facility in Malmö, the waste volumes are reduced through thermal treatment and at the same time energy in the form of power and district heating is produced for the benefit of SYSAV’s owner municipalities.
The waste-to-energy facility of SYSAV in Malmö has been extended by a new unit 4 producing both heat and power on the basis of municipal solid waste and industrial waste from approx. ½ million inhabitants in the 14 municipalities of Southern Skåne.
The newest units are:
Moreover, an absorption heat pump has been installed in order to increase the total efficiency of the plant to more than 100 % by flue gas condensation.
The capacity of the plant is now 650,000 tonnes of waste annually, and it produces 1.4 TWh heat and 0.3 TWh power. The facility is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The facility complies with the strictest environmental standards stipulated by the EU, and in some areas, including NOx the guarantee requirements are even stricter than those of the EU.
Ramboll has since 1998 been SYSAV’s representative.
