Challenge

Tulip Food Company is a modern food processing company exporting products to more than 80 countries worldwide. As part of its continuous focus on efficient and sustainable production, Tulip sought to optimise its water softening process and reduce the consumption of both water and salt.

The existing conventional softening system required significant amounts of water and salt for regeneration and delivered a less stable water quality. Tulip therefore needed a solution that could reduce resource consumption while ensuring reliable and high-quality softened water for food production processes.

Solution

Tulip Food Company replaced its traditional softening system with an industrial HVD water softening plant from BWT. The system has a treatment capacity of up to 50 m³ per hour and is designed for high-efficiency operation.

Compared to conventional softening technologies, the BWT solution features an advanced regeneration process that significantly reduces water and salt consumption while delivering substantially improved water quality. The system was tailored to Tulip’s operational requirements and seamlessly integrated into the existing production environment.

Result

The new BWT HVD softening plant has delivered substantial savings and performance improvements. Water consumption has been reduced by up to 80%, and salt consumption by up to 60%, while water quality has improved by a factor of five.

On an annual basis, Tulip Food Company now saves approximately 5,000 m³ of water and 100 tonnes of salt. Salt deliveries for regeneration have been reduced from every six weeks to just once every five months, providing additional operational and logistical benefits.

Despite relatively low salt prices and a moderate water hardness level of 13 °dH, the investment achieved a return on investment in just 18 months, demonstrating both strong financial and environmental performance.
