Enghave park: Integrated cloudburst protection in recreational areas

Space is at a premium in every urban setting, and we must devise innovative, combined and integrated solutions for tomorrow's urban spaces. As part of a project to refurbish an established park, Enghaveparken, HOFOR helped to develop cloudburst protection in the Vesterbro district of Copenhagen.

The project combines climate protection measures with award-winning architectural design. It pays homage to the history of the park and its location, and encourages visitors to play and relax.

A multifunctional park

In the event of a cloudburst, Enghaveparken can retain 22,600 m3 of rainwater that would otherwise flow into sewers and basements. Climate protection measures are integrated into every corner of the park. Heavy rainfall transforms a multi-purpose sports pitch normally used for hockey and soccer into a basin containing 3,700 m3 of rainwater. Multifunctional seating around the pitch allows for easy wheelchair and disabled access. During a cloudburst, the seating functions as ramps that channel rainwater down into the basin.

Under extreme weather conditions, the park can be closed down and used as an enormous reservoir. A 1 metre-high dyke surrounding the park forms the boundaries. When the dyke is not in use, it functions as seating for visitors to the park. Birdbaths on the top of the dyke to remind visitors of the park’s multiple purposes.

Rainwater is not wasted

Beneath the park’s rose garden, HOFOR has constructed a 2000 m3 underground reservoir, fed with water from the roofs of the nearby Carlsberg Byen district of the city. The city authorities can tap water from the reservoir and use it to water trees and clean the city streets. The collection of roof runoff water reduces the city’s total consumption of drinking water for watering vegetation, and minimises flow into the drains and the risk of flooding in the event of a cloudburst.
