Danish Association of Architectural Firms is the Danish association of private firms of consulting architects representing almost all architectural firms in Denmark. For this reason we provide quick and easy access to the Danish resource base in the area of sustainable architecture. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
The architecture and spatial qualities of educational facilities have an enormous influence on the behaviour and learning of pupils and students. The design of the school and classroom has an important impact on pupil and teacher wellbeing and possibilities for classroom interaction. With simple approaches, which do not have to be expensive, architects and teachers can improve the climate and therefore improve rooms and optimise them for teaching.
We have collected a number of cases on how Danish Architectural Firms uses architecture and spatial qualities of educational facilities to create value for pupil and teacher with less impact on the climate. The examples show how green architecture can attract employees, students or visitors and affect behaviour, working conditions and satisfaction and eventually help generate significant economic value. For example at Copenhagen International School in Nordhavn students are educated for a global future and with focus on sustainability meanwhile DTU Compute works with green, sustainable solutions from top to bottom.
A textbook exampel of sustainability. Students at Copenhagen International School in Nordhavnareeducated for a global future and with focus on sustainability.
At Denmark'slargest and most sustainable international school, innovative and green solutions pervade the building and teaching. Copenhagen International School in Nordhavn is an innovative flagship for teachingsustainability, andthe 1,200 students aretaught in classrooms and learning environments in whichindoorclimate and the green transition take centre stage. There is a play of light in the facade’s 12,000 solar panels, and the panels ensurethat the sun’senergycanbeexploited as it movesacross the sky during the day.

A green innovation community. DTU Computeworks with green, sustainable solutions from top to bottom. learning and green solutions go hand in hand, and the architectural design integrates a multitude of climate, structuraland energy-technology solutions.
At DTU Computeplants and treescontribute to better learning and wellbeing. On the ground floor, 30 trees provide clean air and help the buildingbreathe. A hybrid ventilation system – developed by the university’sown researchers – makes sure that the buildinguses 95 % lessenergycompared to traditional ventilation systems. Rainwater is collected in underground water containers and then used to water trees and flush toilets. The interior landscape is like a green oasis, with trees that fill the rooms and improve the indoor climate by cleaning the air, absorbing heat in summer and adding humidity in winter.

The school in the forest – an environmental role model. In the Municipality of Fredensborg, theysucceeded in transformingFredensborg School Vilhelmsrointo a strongrole model for future climate-adapted school buildings.
Fredensborg School Vilhelmsro is locatedbetweensuburbia and the surrounding landscape. The project integrates several climate-friendly solutions, such as green roofs, geothermal heating and local rainwater management. The rainwater is collected and led into a newly established retention pond. Today, the fauna and flora around the pond have become an integral part of the school’s outdoor learning spaces. The buildings are connected via skywalks at first-floor level, allowing the local community to pass through the school’s areas and use its recreational landscape.
