Challenge

The plastics industry is a hard to abate sector in relation to reducing the carbon footprint of products and materials.

As the LEGO Group, we may be one of the biggest names in toy manufacturing, but we are a smaller player within the wider plastics industry. When it comes to new material use, we can scale innovation and meaningful solutions much faster, when approached through partnership and collaboration.

Solution

The opening of the world’s first commercial scale e-methanol facility in May 2025 is the latest milestone in our ambition to make LEGO® products from more sustainable materials by 2032.

The facility uses groundbreaking ‘Power to X’ technology to combine renewable energy with carbon captured from a biogas facility where it otherwise would be released into the atmosphere, to create e-methanol. We’ll use the e-methanol to help produce some of our LEGO elements, marking an important step towards our transition to more renewable and recycled materials.

To reach our sustainability goals, we need many solutions in addition to this one. We’ve tested more than 600 materials and we will not stop here. Some of our products already use these sustainable alternatives, like Brazilian sugarcane for 200 of our flexible elements, recycled fishing nets and recycled engine oil to make some of our tyres, and artificial marble – commonly used in kitchens – for our transparent pieces. And we’re on track to reach our full year target of 60% of purchased materials to be produced with sustainable sources.

The Kassø PtX project, located in Southern Denmark, is the world’s first large-scale green methanol plant, set to produce up to 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually.

Besides A.P. Møller Maersk and Novo Nordisk, The LEGO Group have also commited to be a offtaker of e-methanol from Kassø, using it to replace fossil methanol in the production of selected products.

We’re proud to be part of this pioneering effort – an important moment for Denmark, for European Energy and for all of us committed to building a more sustainable future.

Using to e-methanol to help make some of our hard and rigid elements marks an important step towards our ambition to lower our carbon footprint, and transition to more renewable and recycled materials, reducing our reliance on virgin fossil-based plastics.
