Maersk Peregrino is the most advanced and technically complex vessel ever built by Maersk. Operating as a floating oil refinery in the Atlantic Ocean, the vessel supports surrounding offshore oil platforms and operates under extreme conditions. This places very high demands on reliability, water quality and operational efficiency.
A stable supply of water of varying qualities is critical — both for drinking water for the crew and for highly demanding process applications such as boilers and steam turbines. The challenge was to design a robust and flexible water treatment solution capable of delivering desalinated water as well as ultra-pure process water, while meeting strict space, energy and reliability requirements in an offshore environment.
BWT designed and installed a complete multi-stage water treatment system tailored specifically to the requirements of Maersk Peregrino. The solution includes a desalination plant combined with advanced downstream water treatment technologies.
The desalinated water is used partly as drinking water for the vessel’s approximately 100-person crew and partly as feed water for subsequent treatment stages. These stages include reverse osmosis and electrodeionisation (EDI), ensuring the production of ultra-pure water suitable for use in boilers and steam turbines.
The system was engineered to ensure high operational reliability, efficient water utilisation and minimal maintenance — all essential factors for offshore installations where access and service opportunities are limited.
The integrated water treatment system provides a continuous and reliable supply of both high-quality drinking water and ultra-pure process water, meeting the stringent quality requirements for critical energy systems onboard the vessel.
As a result, Maersk Peregrino benefits from a robust, efficient and future-proof water treatment solution that supports safe and efficient operations under demanding offshore conditions.
